About the Ayushman Bharat - Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) Scheme

The AB-ArK scheme is a unique, tiered health plan for all residents of Karnataka. It divides the population into two groups: 'Entitled' and 'General' households.

'Entitled' households (PMJAY beneficiaries, BPL card holders) receive a completely free and cashless health cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. 'General' households (all other residents) receive benefits at government-subsidized package rates at empanelled hospitals, meaning they pay only a fraction of the actual cost for treatments. The scheme requires a referral from a public hospital to avail benefits at a private hospital, except in emergencies.

This model ensures that while the most vulnerable are fully protected, every citizen of Karnataka receives significant financial relief from high medical expenses. The scheme is managed by the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST) under the Government of Karnataka.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. What is the Ayushman Bharat - Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) scheme?

AB-ArK is the integrated health insurance scheme of Karnataka, which combines the central PMJAY with the state's Arogya Karnataka scheme. It provides health coverage to ALL residents of the state through a tiered benefit model.

Q. I am not a BPL card holder in Karnataka. Am I still eligible for any benefit?

Yes, absolutely. As a 'General' category beneficiary, you are entitled to treatment at government-subsidized rates at empanelled hospitals. This means the government pays a significant portion of the bill, and you pay the balance, which is much lower than the standard hospital rates.

Q. What is an AB-ArK Health Card and how do I get it?

The AB-ArK Health Card is a co-branded card required to avail benefits under the scheme. You can get this card generated at the kiosk of any empanelled public hospital by providing your Aadhaar card and your ration card (if available).

Q. Is treatment at major hospitals like NIMHANS, Bengaluru covered?

Yes, premier government institutions like the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, and Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences are empanelled under the AB-ArK scheme.

Q. What is the referral system in the AB-ArK scheme?

Under the AB-ArK scheme, patients must first seek treatment at a public/government hospital. If the required treatment is not available there, they will be officially referred to an empanelled private hospital to avail the cashless/subsidized benefit. This referral is not required for medical emergencies.
